Complex Structure of Galaxy Cluster Abell 1689: Evidence for a Merger from X-ray Data?
نویسنده
چکیده
Abell 1689 is a galaxy cluster at z = 0.183 where previous measurements of its mass using various techniques gave discrepant results. We present a new detailed measurement of the mass with the data based on X-ray observations with the European Photon Imaging Camera aboard the XMMNewton Observatory, determined by using an unparameterized deprojection technique. Fitting the total mass profile to a Navarro-Frenk-White model yields halo concentration c = 7.2 −2.4 and r200 = 1.13±0.21 h Mpc, corresponding to a mass which is less than half of what is found from gravitational lensing. Adding to the evidence of substructure from optical observations, X-ray analysis shows a highly asymmetric temperature profile and a non-uniform redshift distribution implying large scale relative motion of the gas. A lower than expected gas mass fraction fgas = 0.072 ± 0.008 (for a flat ΛCDM cosmology) suggests a complex spatial and/or dynamical structure. We also find no signs of any additional absorbing component previously reported on the basis of the Chandra data, confirming the XMM low energy response using data from ROSAT. Application of an XMM-Newton epic Monte Carlo technique to analysis and interpretation of data for the abell 1689, RX J0658-55, and centaurus clusters of galaxies
We propose a new Monte Carlo method to study extended X-ray sources with the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard XMM-Newton. The smoothed particle inference (SPI) technique, described in a companion paper, is applied here to the EPIC data for the clusters of galaxies Abell 1689, Centaurus, and RX J0658-55 (the “bullet cluster”). We aim to show the advantages of this method of simultane...

We present spatially-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies, PKS0745-191, using observations made with the ASCA and ROSAT satellites. The X-ray data measure the density, temperature, and metallicity profiles of the cluster gas and constrain the distribution of mass in the cluster to a radius of 1:5 Mpc. We report the discovery of a bright gravitationally-lensed ar...
متن کاملChandra observation of Abell 1689 : New determination of mass distribution and comparison to lensing measurements
We present a new estimate of the projected X-ray mass of Abell 1689 observed with Chandra, in an attempt to clarify the issue of whether or not there exists a discrepancy between X-ray and gravitational lensing mass estimates claimed in previous investigations based on Einstein, ROSAT and ASCA observations. A particular attention is paid to examining if there is an offset between X-ray centroid...
متن کاملThe Off - Axis Galaxy Cluster Merger Abell 115
We have used a 50.4 ksec Chandra observation to examine the galaxy cluster Abell 115 (z=0.1971). The X-ray surface brightness distribution shows a merger of 2 sub-clusters with substantial off-axis motion. The northern sub-cluster moves toward the southwest and exhibits a strong X-ray surface brightness gradient toward this direction as well as a “fan” of X-ray bright Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM)...
